This is so cool, I'm so interested in your work! I commend you for such a cool project! I'm wondering why some B level players who played few games have a higher ELO than AA players who have played many games. Does it have to do with the starting ELO (which is also different for both players for some reason)?

Thanks for the comment! The reason can be that everyone starts from the same elo of 1000. So B level players will have an easier time beating other "B level" 1000 elo players to rise faster in the ranks. AA players playing other "AA level" players will have a harder time against them just given the higher level.

My hope is that this trend will stabilize over the long run. Open level players do have a higher elo on average, even if they only play against other higher level Open players.

I could try to do it per division, but that would limit the matches analyzed and make it a bit more complex to readout. Will keep an eye on it and see how it looks into next season.

Very interesting. Just thinking out loud, I wonder if there's any way to create a metric that involves "networks" and "connections" of people? As in, if a B-player has played against an A-player, and that A-player against an AA, and the AA against an open... It can find weigh the win of the B to be lower... In any case, again, love this work, and so excited to have found such a charming, fun blog about statistics and volleyball :)

Adam, This is amazing work. I’m the President of the CBVA and I’d love to chat, support your work and potentially even link this to our site if that’s Ok with you. Please reach out at your convenience. Chris@campsurf.com.

Also, I saw a header on wins/losses, but I couldn’t find that actual data. Would love to learn more.
